The Long Run Home
October 25, 2012 Stuff
With Remembrance Sunday coming up, each of us will probably be thinking of our own way to commemorate those who have served and sacrificed in our armed forces. This year, to raise money for the Royal British Legion, and no doubt with his own grandfather in mind, Martyn Bird will be carrying the baton on The Long Run Home.
In his own words…
"I am a 54 year old retired soldier and in the week preceding Remembrance Sunday in November (2nd-8th Nov 2012) I will run 300 miles from Thiepval in France to Alrewas in Staffordshire on behalf of the Royal British Legion.
"The start point at The Thiepval Memorial has the names of more than 72,000 allied service personnel inscribed on its Portland stone façade, none of whom have ever been found. My Grandfather fought there. There is a memorial to Thiepval in my home town of Lisburn, the local army barracks is named after the area and I was stationed a total of 6 years in that barracks, so it has more than a little significance to me.
The finish point at The National Memorial Arboretum is the UK’s year-round centre of Remembrance, a living and lasting memorial to commemorate and celebrate, those who have given their lives in the service of their country, all who have served and those who have suffered as a result of conflict and others who for specific or appropriate reasons are commemorated on the site.
"My plan is for a number of young people, selected from The Army Cadet Force and schools , to carry a wreath in relay from Thiepval to Alrewas. I will also have the pride and honour to carry the message in ‘The Baton’ (made from the handle of a stretcher from Camp Bastion) for the duration of the event to raise awareness for our armed forces.
Any assistance with food, travel and fuel etc. would be very welcome. I have been able to keep cost to a minimum because my friends and I are self-funded for the duration of the event, but I cannot ask the same of the young people who will join me."
We wish Martyn all the best.
Please support, donate and spread the word as much as you can for this great cause.
