February 8, 2018 Newsletter
With recent news about fitness app Strava sharing a little bit too much information about the whereabouts of US soldiers doing their training runs, it’s a good time to think about how you share information online. Security should be a key concern – be really careful about sharing details of your family and where you live. Interestingly, Strava allows you to set an “exclusion” zone around your home (or military base!) which won’t show where you run to and from, just the distance and approximate area. Not much help if you’re in the middle of the desert, but for most of us, quite reassuring.
You also need to be aware of how what you share online impacts on your employability. We know that employers look at LinkedIn but some will also check out your activity on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (links will take you to privacy guides) and it’s worth doing regular checks on the privacy and appropriateness of what you share, to make sure that it paints you in the best possible light. It doesn’t take long, so we highly recommend setting aside a little time to spring clean your social media if you’re about to seek a new role.

You could be eligible for a university degree in management
A university degree in management can lead you into a worthwhile second career. Your rank could make you eligible for an online MBA at a prestigious UK university. Even if you have a specialist skill, a university degree in management is particularly relevant as your next career path should take you into management.
www.onlineuniversitymilipol.com works with military and ex-military candidates worldwide. We pilot you through the university acceptance process by turning your Services experience into ‘academic points’ so that you are offered an online university place with LSM (distance learning associate college of Anglia Ruskin University). There is no charge for this work, as it is paid by LSM, so you can find out if you comply without obligation. We remain with you throughout your study and will even attend the graduation ceremony on your behalf if you are abroad.
The cost of online study is significantly less than that of attending university and, more importantly, you do not need to stop working whilst gaining your degree.
One of the big advantages of online study is flexibility, particularly when you are unable to commit to a fixed weekly schedule. You might even finish earlier than an attending student if you are able to put in more time but your qualification and benefits will be exactly the same. Additionally, you can start after acceptance rather than waiting for the next year like an attending student.

Joke: Fear of Flying
John lives his life by statistics and is afraid to fly. One day his friend, Bill, asks him, "Why do you have this irrational fear of flying?"
"Irrational?" John replies, "Not at all. I've merely calculated the odds of a bomb being placed on a plane and it's much too high for my comfort."
A few days later, Bill boarded a flight only to find John sitting in the seat right next to him.
"What happened? Have the odds changed?"
"No," John replied. "The odds of a bomb being on a plane haven't changed. But I calculated the odd of two bombs being on a plane, and I found those odds much more acceptable. So now I just bring my own."
