Photonics Engineer (103lt) - £35000-£40,000 + Benefits

My client is looking for a Photonics Engineer to enhance their ability to develop their expanding range of scintillation detector products. The candidate would be responsible for the design and optimisation of the optical signal chain from detecting ionising radiation through Scintillator interaction, light propagation through materials, and the conversion of light output to electrical signal.
The individual would have knowledge of and be able to contribute to development of the rest of the signal processing including electronic signal generation, interfacing and data processing.
Main Activities:
• Design of optical systems in scintillation detectors, both theoretically and practically
• Development and characterization of new scintillating materials
• Design of optimized methods of delivering the optical signal into the available signal conversion methods, PMT, SiPM, APD etc.
• Selection of the optimum signal conversion method for each product design
Essential:
• Modelling and simulation of optical processes
• Knowledge of fluorescent and scintillating material properties
• Practical experience of construction, setup and operation of Scintillation/fluorescent detectors
• Practical experience running simulation software
• Able to post process and present results
• Demonstrated understanding of optics, for detector design and materials characterisation
• Open, sharing, communicative
• Normal mode of interaction must be able to share thoughts at an early stage, engage in discussion and where necessary commit to new paths as a result
Desirable:
• Two years industrial experience
• Experience with radiation detector systems for gamma, neutron and x-ray characterisation
• Demonstration of the delivery of the essential requirements in an industrial environment
• Demonstrated experience of nuclear and or x-ray detection
• Experience of Geant4 or similar Monte Carlo techniques
• Experience of ZEMAX or similar ray tracing software
• Understanding of characterisation of active optical materials
• Able to present in a conference or sponsor environment
• Able to present to customers

This position would probably suit a SNCO/WO from a Naval background, preferably within an engineering role.
