My client is seeking a Senior Engineer to join their Electrical Control & Instrumentation (C&I) team within the Facilities Engineering Group are responsible for providing both technical support and design consultancy on C&I plant, systems and equipment for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities within Devonport Royal Dockyard, and Ministry of Defence (MOD) establishments.

Under the technical support function, the team provides technical guidance and advice to the ongoing operations and maintenance of the extant assets, equipment and facilities, and acts as custodian of the technical information/documentation.

The design consultancy activities generally focus on the provision of new, or modification to; C&I designs, asset, equipment and facilities as well as injection of new capabilities and undertaking life extensions activities. This entails the application of design lifecycle processes, undertaking a variety of defined activities and deliverables, and following the appropriate levels of technical governance.

A senior Electrical C&I engineer with a software bias is required to support the Principal C&I engineer in providing their Design and Technical Authority responsibilities to the business.

Therefore, the main purpose of the role will be:

The Senior Electrical C&I Engineer, with a software bias, shall be responsible for operational through life technical support on the design intent and configuration of DRDL’s industrial software control and monitoring systems which includes Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for Electrical Power Distribution systems, multiple Nuclear Facilities and Processes, and several Building Energy Management systems (BEMS).

The Senior Electrical C&I Engineer shall lead design projects for software based control systems, taking responsibility for the design lifecycle. This includes leading the team in developing and managing requirements, producing engineering management plans, authoring specifications, delivering design documentation (such as drawings, design reports, operations and maintenance manuals etc.), producing commissioning documents, and providing technical support to implementation phases of the projects.

The Senior Electrical C&I Engineer is also required to support the Principal Engineer in estimating, planning and resourcing to ensure that the design tasks are carried out within time, quality and budget.

Another key aspect of the role is to contribute to the continuous development of the team by acting as a mentor and coach for junior engineers, graduates and apprentices.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences

To be suitable for this role you’ll need to have significant knowledge of electrical C&I engineering with a bias towards software based control systems including data acquisition systems that incorporate variable speed motors, inverter drives, Programmable Logic Controllers and instrumentation.

A desirable candidate will be able to:
• Demonstrate experience of software/hardware/embedded programming with implementation of languages including IEC61131
• Display sound understating of relevant industry legislation such as Electricity at work regulations, CDM Regulations, LV Directive and EMC Directive.
• Demonstrate proficiency of design lifecycles and production of C&I design deliverables.
• Review and approve technical documents & drawings
• Positively interact with customers and stakeholders to capture project scopes and requirements to deliver successful projects.
• Operate as a good team player and leader with the capability to mentor, coach and develop individuals to be C&I software engineers.
• Provide planning and budgetary support to C&I projects

It would be advantageous to hold experience of:
• Applying IEC 61508 Functional Safety Standards to designs
• Nuclear safety critical and safety related systems
• Supporting engineering operational activities in a highly regulated environment.

Qualifications
• It is essential for the candidate to hold a degree / HND and equivalent experience in an appropriate electrical engineering discipline or equivalent specialist control, PLC, or data acquisition systems.
• Professional registration with an engineering body is desirable.
• It would be an advantage to be trained in IOSH Managing Safely.
