Electronics and Software Engineer vacancy in Canterbury (221jc)

My client is a high-tech company offering industry leading nanotechnology detection expertise are now seeking to recruit an Electronics and Software Engineer for their Instrumentation and Development department to help launch new products on to the market.

You will work with a small team of scientists and engineers and must be prepared to adapt to any and all engineering and related challenges that can emerge within a small team. These can range from day-to-day research driven rapid response change requests, to large scale deliverable driven managed projects and product development activities. Therefore, an enthusiasm for a broad range of tasks with a good eye for detail is required while keeping the broader picture and wider priorities in mind.

You should have a proven ability to design and develop new engineering solutions to problems. A rational approach, critical thinking, and strong self-management skills are considered essential, with an aptitude for spotting errors and suggesting improvements. A broad-minded background and ability to understand the relevant science and engineering behind design concepts would be beneficial. In addition, you should be well organised and have the ability to manage multiple projects in parallel while taking responsibility for their own target deliverables. This work may also entail interfacing with external companies and hence excellent people skills are essential, with the ability to understand, collaborate on, and communicate requirements and designs to others.

Prior experience with instrumentation development and/or of working within a small development team would be a considerable advantage. You must be confident in working within a focussed and fast paced environment and be both forthright in their views as well as flexible in adapting solutions to meet changing requirements.

Particular technical skills of interest include:
• Expertise in electronics design based on MCU (ARM and Microchip) using digital/ADC/DAC/PWM input/output ports.
• Communication interface design on USB HID/Virtual port, serial RS232/RS485, I2C/SPI, OEM WiFi and LCD touch screens. Firmware design on embedded C/Assembler platforms using Keil uVision IDE and MPLAB MCC18 IDE, programming and debugging tools.
• Communication protocols, ASCII/RTU ModBus, I2C/SPI, generic protocols on RS232.
• Knowledge of instrumentation, data acquisition and real time processing, software development on LabView, MSVisual Studio (C# .Net), Matlab.
• Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout design software tools (preferably Altium).
• SMT prototyping and hands-on ability.

Other Relevant skills include:
• Instrumentation prototyping experience.
• Strong problem-solving abilities.
• Good communication skills
• Control of physical systems (e.g. temperature, flow rates, pressure)
• Electronics design and assembly.
• Software development for instrumentation control and interfacing.
