My client has delivered specialist defence equipment for over 30 years are now seeking a Principal Systems Engineer to join their team.

As a Systems Engineer, to conduct systems engineering activities, either alone on a small project or as part of a larger project team, adhering to Engineering Function processes or project specific tailoring of those processes.

Systems Engineers will create and sustain successful, purposeful, systems that:
• Relate to the development and delivery of goods and services;
• Deliver real benefits to the company, suppliers and customers;
• Works with all technical domains, and all business functions;

As a System Design Authority provide design governance to ensure projects are technical compliant and that all engineering activities are conducted to an acceptable technical quality in accordance with company procedures.

A Systems Engineer will be responsible for:
• Delivering allocated tasks within budget and to timescales as agreed with the project management team.
• Conducting Systems Engineer tasks throughout the systems lifecycle consisting of:
• System testing and reporting:
• Configuration and Data Management
• Training and Development
o Maintain and develop your own functional skills relevant to the systems discipline.
o Identify own training needs and develop your personal career path to support the personal development process.
• Adhere to the company’s systems engineering processes and procedures.
• Supporting the safety verification process as required;
• Support planning through input to project schedule by estimating tasks and adhere to agreed estimates/timescales.
• Supports Bids by providing input on technical solutions, estimates and plans.

A Systems Engineer will be accountable for:
• Providing regular and clear technical progress reports to project management.
• Acting as a team player who recognises impact of own performance and behaviour in the wider team.

As a System Design Authority will be accountable for:
• The technical solution to meet the customer, legislative and business requirements.
• Ensuring that the project/sub-system is design, developed or supported in accordance with the company processes and procedures. This includes, but not limited to: Product safety, design for manufacture, quality, development practices and guidelines.

As a System Design Authority will also be responsible for technical oversight of Engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle. This includes:
• Product Certification and Compliance approval (all technical aspects, including contractual & legislative). This may include airworthiness where applicable.
• Technical governance of engineering activities on a project. Any issues identified should be escalated as appropriate.
• Design sign-off through key stages of the lifecycle, particularly at design reviews, or significant design change.
• Approval of customer or critical concessions.
• Ensuring that Design Reviews are appropriately planned, reported and signed off.
• Approval of key technical management plans.
• Approval of key specifications for development or procurement.
• Ensuring engineering process are adhered to in accordance with company processes.
• Liaison with Engineering Managers to establish lifecycle status planning & issue resolution.
• Identifying Quality and Safety issues requiring support external from the project team
• Coordination of Sub-System Design Authorities (where applicable).
• Identifying strategic resource and capability issues to help establish and support future projects demands.
• Supporting Engineering Lead as required for technical Customer discussions.
• Supporting evaluation, mitigation and management of engineering risks.
• Coaching and mentoring of other engineers.
• Liaising with customers and suppliers as required.
• Generating, understanding and reviewing user requirements documentation
• Writing the project System Requirements Specifications;
• Developing and documenting the System architecture;
• Developing and documenting the systems design through System Design Specifications and Interface Specifications
• Defining the system’s sub-systems and their requirements including hardware and software
• Developing and continually refining the system acceptance strategy, and verification method for each system requirement (incl. Acceptance Management Plan);
• Ensuring the specification, design and acceptance are fully traceable
• Leading with system testing
• Deriving, defining and documenting testing
• Conducting integration testing
• Conducting system testing (informal and formal);
