My client, who are a global technology company, who focus on supporting the Broadcast, cable and digital sectors are now seeking a Power Station Senior Engineer to join their team in Ascension Islands.

You will be reporting to the Relay Station Manager as the power station not only supplies power and water for the site, but also the majority of the Island including the RAF camp, Georgetown and Two Boats village.

Therefore, you will be responsible for the daily management of the Power Station assets and staff. Ensuring all safety legislation is followed, maintenance activities are complete and operational needs are met in a cost effective and safe manner.

Your key responsibilities will include:

Ensure the continuous improvement in safety by audits and coaching, ensuring all relevant legislation is met and a high standard of safety is maintained at all times.

Ensure the safe, reliable, efficient operation of all Power Station Assets. These assets range from HV Diesel generating sets, wind energy convertors, Reverse Osmosis plants down to the Water Distribution network, water storage facility and accommodation appliances.

Direct all Operational and Maintenance work on the Island relating to the Power Station, and become a key stakeholder involved with Island wide decision making. Searching out improvements both operationally (shift patterns, holiday rotas, running regimes, safety documents, modifications etc) and within maintenance systems (planning Major Overhauls, Station Outages, Upgrades, Methods of work, managing stock and documentation control).

Mentoring staff in personal development, safe working practices and time management. Managing holidays, sickness, disputes and disciplinary incidents. Ensuring staff have appraisals and have SMART targets

Managing the supply of electricity and water to the Island to ensure both meet UK legislation and monitoring the consumption.

Key Power Station Assets include:
• 5 x Medium speed V12 diesel generating sets
• 5 x 11kV 1.35MW Generators
• 5 x 330kW Wind Energy Convertors
• 4 x Reverse Osmosis plants capable of producing 120,000L per day each
• 8 Saltwater borehole pumps and associated pipework, strainers and control valves
• 11kV switchgear
• LV Switchgear
• Battery systems
• Fresh Water transfer pumps
• Fresh water storage tanks and 10kM of distribution pipework
• Underground water distribution networks within the local villages
• Over 6,000,000L Diesel fuel storage capacity
• Ship to shore fuel delivery systems
• 60 staff bungalows and barracks
• 11kV Overhead lines, underground cables, Ring Main units, Pole mounted disconnectors etc.
• LV Underground cables and feeder pillars across the Island
• A fleet of vehicles including Hiabs, Transits, a dump truck, a Telehandler, Bowsers, Forklifts, Land Rovers and many more.
• A large Generation building, Workshop, Control room and stores.

Essential Qualifications/Experience

• At least 5 years’ experience working at a Power Station or equivalent heavy industrial site in a supervisory or management role.
• Experience managing staff and contractors
• IOSH or NEBOSH qualified
• Hold a qualification in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (HNC/ HND / Degree)
• Have experience in the operation and maintenance of large diesel engines, electrical generators and excitation systems, HV switchgear and cables, Water production and storage.
• Previous management of safe systems of work, and knowledge of current HSE legislation and guidelines
• Previous experience setting, managing and reviewing budgets
• Previous experience of Project management and Contract management
• Willing to become an active member of the community

Desirable Qualifications / Experience

• A Senior Authorised Person for High Voltage networks
• Capable of major overhaul, testing and commissioning of large, medium speed, bedplate diesel engines.
• Have served a recognised craft apprenticeship or hold appropriate certificates of competency (RN, MN, MOD Army, D of T), or equivalent.
• Qualifications/practical experience in machine workshop, machine tool operation and mechanical workshop practices.
• Experience of High Voltage Switching and capable of becoming an Authorised Person for the Island Network
• Capable of installation, testing and commissioning of High Voltage and LV Switchgear
• Experience of HV cable jointing and testing
• Operation and maintenance of desalination plant using reverse osmosis systems.

In return they are offering a good base salary which is tax free, relocation travel costs, both at the start as well as the end of the post, which includes personal belongings to and from the island. 25 days leave, with one free return flight per year. Rent free accommodation, which also covers electricity and water allowances, which is worth about £5k per year. All Medical and Dental cover, both for yourself and family should you wish to take them with you, as well as a cost of living allowance, which currently run as £6,562 Family or £3,500 Single per annum which will be paid monthly as well as an addition location allowance of £2,500 per annum.
