My client an International Defence Prime is currently seeking a Principal Naval Architect – Structural within the Marine & Technology division, based at Devonport, Plymouth.

Job Description:
Energy & Marine Technology is a business unit in the Marine & Technology Division of Babcock International Group.
We are based in six sites in the UK from Aberdeen down to Plymouth.
The business unit is going through a massive period of growth and over the next three to five years will move from being a £100m business with circa 800 staff to a £200m business with 1100 staff.

The business unit undertakes work in the marine defence and commercial sectors.

Main Purpose of Role

To develop the capability to produce platform solutions against customer requirements in the Naval and Commercial sectors.

To take the leading role for providing platform solutions (concept designs), against specific capability requirements, for a range of Naval and Commercial vessel types

Key Skills and Knowledge:
Specific to the role the successful candidate will:

• Have knowledge of the MoD Surface Ship and/or Submarine vessel types, and their commercial equivalents
• Have knowledge of the application of the platform concept design cycle in the context of the MoD CADMID and Project Lifecycle frameworks
• Have knowledge of how capital and through life costs influence the concept design cycle
• Have strong understanding of the importance of configuration control in the design environment
• Have a strong system engineering approach to platform concept design lifecycle
• Manage project risk and Company liabilities within the concept design lifecycle
• Have a broad understanding of existing Naval or Commercial markets and how global factors are likely to influence the market place or design solutions
• All relevant disciplines will be considered with relevant experience

Specific to the role the successful candidate will:
• Have excellent communication skills both written and verbal
• Be a team player, building effective working relationships
• Have the capability to lead and direct a small team of engineers and designers

Experience

• Candidates will be expected to have practical experience in the application of design throughout the project lifecycle
• Candidates to have extensive and demonstrable experience working in a design engineering environment
• Candidates to have demonstrable experience of design of naval and commercial vessels

Qualifications

• To hold Chartered Engineer status, or eligible for application

Security:

Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment. The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.
