Job Description:
Energy & Marine Technology is a business unit in the Marine & Technology Division of Babcock International Group.
We are based in six sites in the UK from Aberdeen down to Plymouth.
The business unit is going through a massive period of growth and over the next three to five years will move from being a £100m business with circa 800 staff to a £200m business with 1100 staff.
The business unit undertakes work in the marine defence and commercial sectors.
Main purpose of role
To continue the development of the role of Technical Authority and the business capabilities to support growth in the Naval and Commercial sectors.
To be the Technical Authority responsible for assuring the output of the department across engineering and design solutions primarily from an electrical perspective for a number of significant Naval and Commercial programmes.
Key Skills and Knowledge:
Specific to the role the successful candidate will:
• Have knowledge of the MoD Surface Ship and/or Submarine Design Authority organisation
• Have knowledge of the application of Engineering Governance within the MoD CADMID and Project Lifecycle frameworks
• Have strong understanding of the importance of configuration control in the design environment
• Have a strong system engineering approach to design lifecycle
• Have ability to chair design reviews with internal and external stakeholders
• Manage project risk and Company liabilities within the project lifecycle
• All relevant disciplines will be considered with relevant experience

Key Behaviours and Technical Competencies
• Specific to the role the successful candidate will:
• Have extensive and wide spread knowledge and experience of marine electrical generation and distribution systems and their design and operation
• Have a working knowledge of radar, communication and weapon systems
• Knowledge and experience with power electronics in variable speed drives and conversion equipment would be an advantage
• Have excellent communication skills both written and verbal
• Have the confidence to challenge and question design proposals at any stage of the design life cycle
• Lead and manage small teams of engineers and designers
• Provide a strong focus on the Health & Safety of self and others
• Be a team player, building effective working relationships
Experience:
• Candidates will be expected to have practical experience in the application of design throughout the project lifecycle
• Candidates to have extensive and demonstrable experience in a design engineering environment
• It is preferable that candidates have experience of ship/submarine design
Qualifications
• To hold Chartered Engineer status, or eligible for application
Security:
Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment. The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.
